Permanent Makeup FAQ

What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup (PMU) is a cosmetic tattoo that enhances brows or lips using specialized pigments and delicate techniques. Results look soft, natural, and designed to complement your features.

How long does permanent makeup last?

Retention varies by service:

  • Brows: 1–3 years
  • Lip Blush: 1–3 years

Touch-ups help maintain color and shape.

Does the procedure hurt?

Most clients experience mild discomfort, similar to a scratch or pressure sensation. We use professional-grade topical numbing to keep you as comfortable as possible.

What is the healing process like?

Healing takes 7–14 days externally and up to 6–8 weeks internally.
You may experience:

  • Flaking or peeling
  • Slight swelling (especially lips)
  • Temporary darkening before softening to the final color

This is completely normal.

Will my PMU look too dark at first?

Yes. All PMU appears darker within the first 48–72 hours.
Color softens 30–50% as it heals.

Do I need a touch-up?

Most clients require a touch-up 4–6 weeks after the initial session to perfect shape, color, and symmetry. Some services (like lip blush) may need additional layering depending on pigment retention.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Please review our full pre-care guide, but in general:

  • Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and blood thinners 48 hours before
  • Stop retinoids/acids 7 days prior
  • Do not schedule facials or chemical peels before PMU

Who is NOT a candidate for PMU?

PMU is not recommended if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are on Accutane (must wait 12 months after final dose)
  • Have active eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis in the area
  • Have uncontrolled diabetes or certain autoimmune conditions
  • Have a history of keloids
  • Are prone to severe allergic reactions to pigments

A consultation is recommended if you’re unsure.

Can I bring brow or lip inspiration photos?

Yes! We encourage inspiration photos. Your artist will map a shape that suits your face, bone structure, and personal style.

Will my brows be shaved?

No. We keep your natural brow hair. Mapping is done around your natural shape to create symmetry and enhancement.

Can I get PMU if I already have an old tattoo?

Possibly. We need to evaluate the color, saturation, and placement first. Some clients may need color correction or removal before reworking.

How long does the appointment take?

Most PMU services take 2–3 hours, including mapping, numbing, design, and tattooing.

How should I care for my PMU after the appointment?

Avoid:

  • Sweating
  • Hot showers/steam
  • Sun exposure
  • Picking or scratching
  • Makeup on the area for at least 7–10 days

We will provide full Studio Ninethreeseven aftercare instructions at your appointment.

Is PMU safe?

Yes. We follow strict hygienic practices, use professional certificates, single-use needles, sterilized equipment, and high-quality pigments designed for cosmetic tattooing.

When will I see my final results?

Your true, healed color appears after 6–8 weeks. A touch-up may be needed to adjust pigment or shape.
